Sardinian Wines - The standard of excellence since ancient times

Forsberg

The great Italian astronomer, Galileo once said, "Wine is sunlight, held together by water!" This seems truer than ever on the island of Sardinia, where the blend of unpolluted mountain rains and the powerful Mediterranean sun make for some of the best grapes in the world. Wine is the poetry of life in Sardinia. And to a Sardinian, no meal is completely without at least one glass.

The wines of Sardinia are possibly the least known and unexplored delights in all of Italy. Whether you are sipping on your terrace or toasting over a meal in our restaurant, you will taste the poetry of the island the moment it touches your lips. Try exploring one of the numerous vineyards or wine shops that are a stones throw away from the hotel. Our concierge will be happy to help you set up a local wine tasting tour. And there are plenty of vineyards to see. Sardinia has been a serious center of wine production for centuries. Even before the Roman Empire, Sardinia was a bustling island with many villages, harbors, vineyards and wineries. During the 12th & 13th centuries it was even a crime for vintners to allow their vines to go uncared for. Some of them paid for their lack interest with imprisonment, or worse.

The local vintners of today still use traditional techniques, aided by modern technology, to produce a host of excellent wines no less amazing than those ancient vintages that became so famous. And it is the variety of sumptuous grapes, both red and white, that are the foundation of greatness. Among the whites are the light Semidano grape, and the hearty, resilient Vermentino, produced in the village of Gallura. The most familiar and well know Sardinian wine is a golden dry white called Vernaccia di Oristano. It is extremely popular with fish and Sardinian lobster. The reds range from the deep ruby-red Monica grape, brought over by the Spaniards to the elusive bluish black Barbera Sarda. The Cannonau is the most famous Sardinian red wine; it almost always has a warm flavor, with an aftertaste which is similar to the bitter taste of dark chocolate. The list is enormous, begging to be discovered!

Tasting wines can take an afternoon or many fun filled days. Our knowledgeable staff can assist you in a custom itinerary that will take you to the finest local wineries. After a few "tastes', you may prefer to sit back, relax and let the local experts do the driving; there are many wonderful local tours available to escort and educate. In April Sardinia will be host to the First Porto Cervo Wine Festival; bringing together experts, journalists and wine enthusiast from all over the world. And if you prefer to sip your wine at the hotel, we have an excellent wine cellar with many local choices for you to select from. If you love wine Sardinia is a treasure chest waiting to be opened, breathed and tasted!

Salute!

"The flavor of wine is like delicate poetry."
