Costa Smeralda |
 |
Costa Smeralda is the name given to the coastline from Golfo Aranci to Baja Sardinia. It is the "fairytale" created by Prince Karim Aga Khan in the 1960’s in an area known as Monti di Mola which, at the time, was inhabited only by shepherds and farmers in coasta smeralda.
Today, Costa Smeralda is one of Sardegna's prime tourist destinations with an abundance of wonderful beaches, luxurious hotels, numerous inlets of naturally weathered rocks emerging from emerald-coloured water.
Porto Cervo, the undisputed capital of the Costa Smeralda was created by the world renowned architects Luigi Vietti and Jacque Couelle who articulated and gave rise to Prince Aga Khan's genius and ideas.
Porto Cervo, one of the biggest and best equipped port towns of the Mediterranean is also home to the well-known Costa Smeralda Yacht Club organizer of prestigious regattas in the area.
A romantic city walk takes you from the small Piazza delle Chiacchere to the Sottopiazza through quaint streets lined with designer boutique stores. From there you can carry on lingering to the next piazza across from the "porto vecchio" from where you can enjoy a wide display of yachts and boats and a famous Sardinian pink sunset - a highlight of the day. Everywhere you look there are flower-laden balconies built in the typical building style of the Costa Smeralda. You are surrounded by wonderful villas & all comfort luxury hotels & cool restaurants perfectly tucked into the green backdrop of the Mediterranean coastline.
Dominating the landscape is the gorgeously appointed Porto Cervo's Stella Maris church, designed by the renowned artist, Busiri Vici and boasting an impressive view of the Marina and the Porto Cervo Yacht Club.
Closer to the Hotel Gabbiano Azzurro (only 6 kms. away to the north) is the town of Porto Rotondo situated on the promontory and port of Monte Ladu and Ponte Volpe. Hotels in Costa smeralda are nearby these beaches so hotel guests can enjoy the day lying on the hotel's private beach or spend every day on a different beach. Beach in Costa smeralda attracts tourists because of its beautiful ports & location.
Separating the Cugnana Gulf from the Marinella Gulf, Porto Rotondo is a tourist destination renowned for its Marina and night life among the international jet-setting crowd. Constructed around 1967 by the Venetian family Donà delle Rose, the Porto Rotondo Marina is one of the most renowned landmarks of the Mediterranean.
Some of the sites that should not be missed are: the Church of San Lorenzo which boasts Mario Ceroli’s wood-carved sculptures; the characteristic Amphitheatre constructed entirely from granite; the beautiful and quaint Piazzetta San Marco; the harbour; the Casbah and a relaxed walk along the pier.
There are many beaches along the Costa Smeralda which are easily reachable by car. Travelling north from the hotel you will come across the Portisco, the Rena Bianca, the Liscia Ruia (also known as Long Beach) and the Celvia Beaches. Also not to be missed, are the small, but gorgeous spiaggia del Principe (the Prince’s beach), the Romazzino, the Capriccioli and many more beaches and inlets. |
