Nuraghe Losa

At 160 km and 1h and 50m drive from Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites, via Oschiri and Macomer, immersed in the greenery of central-western Sardinia, is the Nuraghe Losa, one of the best known megalithic remains, well preserved and representative of the Nuragic civilization. It is 19mt high (originally it was about 30mt high) and has a solid triangular base of 20–25mt on each side. Just to get an idea, Stonehenge is 9mt high and 33mt in diameter. The original name "nurache 'e losas", (nuraghe of the tombs), was due to the Roman cinerary urns that emerge near the area. You can still see the shape of the nuraghe that rises on the Abbasanta plateau from a distance. It is truly a unique experience observing the elegance of its masonry techniques, entirely in basaltic rock. All around are the remains of a large settlement surrounded by the greenery of the Mediterranean scrub, testifying to the millenary life of the site, from the Nuragic age to Roman times, up to the early Middle Ages (7th-8th century).

It is a three-lobed nuraghe with a central tower and three more towers around the donjon. It dates back to the Middle Bronze Age (15th-14th century BC) and includes also a rampart (peripheral defence fortress) and the remains of circular huts, a village built in the middle of the Late Bronze and Iron Age (XIII-IX BC). At the entrance, a huge compact mass - to which we owe the excellent state of conservation - contains spacious rooms. Across the main entrance and a straight corridor, you enter the central tower (keep) and the two side towers. Through the corridor, you can breathe the scent of the moss that covers the stones and immerse yourself in the nuragic magic. A spiral ramp climbs clockwise and accesses the small upper chamber, while it once also reached the top. Around there are the three smaller towers with tall and narrow rooms, surrounded by a solid oval-shaped wall, equipped with doors and two protruding turrets with walls pierced by slits that close the entire structure. At the base of the western tower, there is a cistern. In front of the entrance, there is an imposing round building, perhaps the meeting hut, with two opposite entrances, two large niches, four cabinets and five loopholes.

Of the extensive settlement of three and a half hectares, only a part has been excavated. In various points, to testify the various historical passages, the remains of Nuragic homes, houses from the late Punic, Roman republican and imperial, late Roman and Byzantine periods. Distant from the inhabited site stands a Giants' tomb built with perfectly worked blocks, unfortunately, dismantled over the millennia.

About 10 km away from the Nuraghe Losa, in the same Paulilatino territory, in the province of Oristano, you can visit the Nuragic Complex Of Santa Cristina In Paulilatino, where there is a beautiful sacred well, several meeting huts and houses dating back to various historical periods.
