Atzara: A Tour Of Medieval Boroughs

Atzara is a medieval village dating back to the early years of 1000 AD. It is 190 km far from the Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites, a 2-hour and 20-minute drive away.

On your way you pass by Posada, another village that is worth visiting, both famous for their historical centres and belonging to the 200 most beautiful boroughs in Italy, rich in natural, historical, artistic and cultural wealth.

The peculiarity of the village of Atzara allows it to participate, with the villages of Castelsardo and Posada to "The Romantic Night of the most beautiful villages in Italy - the white night of lovers" on 23 June 2018, an evening dedicated to feelings and emotions.

Atzara is located in the basin of the river Araxisi on the western side of Gennargentu, in Barbagia. It was part of the Giudicato Of Arborea and on the XV century passed to the Aragonese’s domain. It was recovered by the Savoy in 1839.

The architectural constructions of Catalan taste preserves trachyte chiselled frames and the old granite houses’ lofts still wear ancient oak boards.

Alleys and narrow byways converge on the square of the Gothic-Aragonese Church of Sant'Antioco Martyr, dating back to the end of the fifteenth century, hosting a fine wooden statue of the Virgin as well as silverware both of the sixteenth century.

Nestled as a modern precious stone in an ancient jewel, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art stands in the centre of the borough; it is dedicated to the Spanish painter Antonio Ortiz Echague who lived in Atzara his most inspired period and in 1908 painted his most important work, the "Fiesta de la cofradia de Atzara".

Important is the Sardinian Craftsmanship of carved wooden chests and works on the loom, such as carpets, tapestries and blankets weaved with the pibiones technique; but above all, there is the wine culture. Since the Middle Ages, thanks to the microclimate suitable to its vines, the wines produced at Atzara are excellent, one for all the Mandrolisai that already in the fifteenth century cheered the tables of the Giudicato di Arborea.

Sardinia is just one of those things that either you love it or adore it” (quote)
