10 Nuragic Villages: Unforgettable Experience

Some Nuragic villages arise isolated, while others are connected to by fence walls enclosing the huts. The Nuragic populations often lived in villages leaning against the main towers. They were mostly simple huts sets with a roof of trunks and branches, plastered inside with mud or clay, and sometimes insulated with cork. In the last phase of the Nuragic civilization, were developed sector huts overlooking a courtyard often equipped with a bread oven. Characteristic are the meeting huts, with a stone seat all around, probably for the assemblies of the village authorities.

  1. Tiscali's Nuragic Village (116 Km from Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites and 1h 30m drive) (to Dorgali, then trekking) Inside the Sardinian mountain Tiscali, a true fortress of nature, in one of the most strategic and inaccessible places of the Supramonte, there are the vestiges of a Nuragic village, belonging to the period between the XV and VIII century BC. A territory that is all an open-air archaeological park.
  2. Tharros The Phoenician Town (220 km from Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites and 2h 40m drive) While strolling through the remains of Tharros in this splendid open-air museum, you can breathe the Sardinian history and at the same time be enchanted by the culture of the civilizations of the past. After the Phoenicians, Tharros was occupied and expanded by the Carthaginians and, following the Punic Wars, it was conquered by Rome. During the imperial age the aqueduct, the baths and the basalt paved streets were built.
  3. Nuragic Complex Of Santa Cristina In Paulilatino (178 Km from Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites and 2h drive) Positioned in the middle of a green area surrounded by olive trees, there is a large egg-shaped enclosure inside which another insertion, in the shape of a keyhole, which contains a vestibule and the trapezoidal staircase of the sacred well, built with polished stones, a masterpiece of geometric perfection that celebrates the fascinating Nuragic cult of the waters.
  4. “Su Nuraxi”: Nuragic Village of Barumini (260 Km from Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites and 3h 30m drive) Su Nuraxi, in its completeness, conveys us better than any other Sardinian Nuragic sites with more than one tower, the history that dates back to more than 3000 years ago when, to defend the territory, they were erected for a military function very similar to the medieval bastions.
  5. “Sa Seddà 'e Sos Carros” Nuragic Complex (127 Km from Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites and 2h drive) The era is the same of the ancient Egypt’s pyramids, or of the Mesopotamia’s Ziqqurats, places that have left us some fantastic archaeological finds, such as this Nuragic Complex which in Sardinian means "the passage point of carts" perhaps to indicate the intense commercial activity of the place.
  6. Pranu Muttedu Park - "The Sardinian Stonehenge" (290 km from Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites and 3h 20m drive) The combination of the monumental heritage with the environmental one, the variety of colours and fragrances that the evergreen shrubs of the scrubland give the site a suggestion and a particularity that deserves to be visited.
  7. Albucciu Nuragic Complex (29 km from Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites and 40m drive) The past is difficult to construe, because it arrives to us in shreds and with studying, researching and passion we try to give it the appearance as similar to the original by interpreting it in the most plausible way possible.
  8. La Prisgiona Nuraghe (31 km from Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites and 40m drive) One of the most interesting Nuragic sites in north-eastern Sardinia, a Nuragic stronghold that tells the importance of the progress of its inhabitants. By visiting it, it takes you on a journey through a remote past, discovering the greatness and the splendour of a Nuragic monument immersed both in the green of the Mediterranean scrub and in the mystery that surrounds it.
  9. Mont'e Prama’s Giants (208 km from Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites and 2h 30m drive) The most important Nuragic necropolis had been discovered, a heroes’ sepulchre, covered by an aura of legend. The statues represent young men: 16 boxers, 6 archers, 6 warriors. The 28 mighty sculptures are the only stone statues in the Mediterranean, dating back to three thousand years ago, given us back by the Nuragic world.
  10. Mount Sirai’s Nuragic Fortress (324 km from Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites and 3h 40m drive) Upon arrival, the eye wonders in a large area of well-ordered stones, of unearthed stones which, however, hypothesize as many being still underground. Of its ancient glory only the stones, the bones of the earth remain. Bones buried in Mother Earth, virtually roots of life. The comparison, which comes to us from remote texts, where stone represents the roots of divine creation, is fantastic.

“What remains on earth when time has sieved life? The fragments remain, the ruins. If the ancient survives through the ruins, being nature's work of art, and throughout the finds, archaeology is perhaps the supreme moment, the kairos, of immortality.” (Flaminia Cruciani)
