Mount Limbara: Nature And Legend

by Daniela Toti

In the heart of Gallura rises Mount Limbara, the highest peak in Northern Sardinia. A place where the strength of nature meets the allure of mystery, where rock encounters wind and ancient legends still seem to breathe among the forests.

Those who reach these heights, over 1,300 metres above sea level, immediately sense a different atmosphere. The air is thinner, the silence deeper, and the landscape opens into a mosaic of granite, cork oak trees and small lakes reflecting the sky. Mount Limbara is a natural sanctuary, but also a symbolic place, where nature and spirituality merge into a single voice.

The name Limbara may derive from Limes Balares, the boundary of the ancient Balari people. Even today it is a boundary, though between two worlds: the sea, visible on the horizon on clear days, and the island’s interior, wild and silent.

The Limbara landscape is a mountain shaped by granite and wind: sculpted rock formations, forests of holm oaks, chestnut trees and cork oaks, and springs of remarkably pure water. Here one breathes the essence of the most authentic Gallura.

In spring, the mountain dresses itself in colour: the white of rockrose, the lilac of thyme, the yellow of broom. In autumn, the air carries the scent of mushrooms and damp earth. It is a living mountain, changing its face with every season.

Like many ancient places in Sardinia, Mount Limbara is also rich in legends. It is said that witches and nocturnal spirits once inhabited these heights, the Cogas, whom we have also mentioned in the article Sa Bidda De Is Cogas. On full moon nights, they were believed to dance around fires lit among the rocks.

Some shepherds claimed to have seen them, wrapped in long black cloaks, vanishing into the morning mist. Others said their laughter echoed in the wind.

Not all stories, however, speak of fear. There is also the legend of Giolzia, the beautiful Warrior Princess who built her stronghold on Mount Limbara itself. The remains of a medieval fortification dating back to the 10th–11th century can still be found here, giving their name to the locality known as Giolzia.

Today, Mount Limbara is an ideal destination for those who love nature and silence. Well-marked trails lead to breathtaking viewpoints, such as the summit of Punta Balistreri, from which the horizon stretches as far as Corsica and the northern coasts of Sardinia.

Near Vallicciola, the Limbara Botanical Garden hosts over 500 plant species, some of them endemic, and offers a sensory journey through colours and scents. While walking through the woods, it is not uncommon to encounter mouflons, wild boars, or birds of prey circling above, silent witnesses to an unspoilt ecosystem. The mountain is also an excellent place for stargazing: far from artificial lights, the Limbara sky comes alive with stars in rare clarity.

On clear days, from the sea at Golfo Aranci or from Olbia, its silhouette traces the horizon, reminding us that Sardinia is not only an island of the sea, but also of mountains and forests.
