The Sos Pupos Cliff Of Bosa

by Daniela Toti

Just a few kilometers from Bosa, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and a jewel of Sardinia’s western coast (about a 2-hour drive – 164 km from the Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites), lies a spectacular natural treasure: the Sos Pupos Cliff. This natural site is not only a place to visit but also a visual and sensory experience that tells the story of millions of years of geological and cultural history.

The name “Sos Pupos”, which in Sardinian means "the children", comes from the rounded shapes of the rocks, resembling small figures watching over the coast.

The cliff is a rare example of natural art carved by erosion. The rocks, dating back to the Miocene, reveal through their unusual forms a long story of wind, sea, and time.

  • Volcanic formations: ancient tuffaceous lava shaped by atmospheric agents.

  • Double colour layers: the lower part of the rocks shows greenish tones, while the upper layer takes on reddish hues, creating a fascinating contrast that becomes more intense in the evening hours.

  • Lunar landscape: the imposing cliffs, spires, and rounded reliefs give the place an almost extraterrestrial appearance, often described as a “lunar landscape.”

  • Natural pools: the action of the sea has created small basins that remain filled with water even in summer, perfect for cooling off in a wild and unspoiled environment.

The rounded rock shapes, known as pupos, can reach up to 2 or 3 meters in height and resemble small sculptures, formed not by human hands but by the forces of nature.

One of the best ways to admire Sos Pupos is to arrive by sea, but for trekking lovers, there are also trails leading to the cliff—though preparation is essential:

  • The most scenic route starts from the town of Bosa, crosses Cala ‘e Moros, and continues almost to Cala Rapina.

  • The coastal path winds through Mediterranean scrub, offering views that reward the effort of the walk.

  • Trekking or trail shoes are indispensable, as the terrain is uneven and, in some sections, slippery.

The cliff is not only a place of beauty but also a natural heritage to be protected. It is part of the Site of Community Importance (SCI) “Hinterland and coastal area between Bosa, Capo Marargiu and Porto Tangone”, included in the Natura 2000 network.

This means that the area is recognized at a European level as a valuable ecosystem, both for its biodiversity and for the rarity of its geological and landscape features.

The Sos Pupos Cliff is one of those places that combine aesthetic wonder with emotional connection. It is not simply about observing rocks, but about immersing oneself in a landscape that seems to tell stories:

  • Geological stories of ancient eruptions and millennia of erosion.

  • Cultural stories linked to Sardinian names and oral traditions.

  • Personal stories of those who, walking or sailing along the coast, find themselves surprised by a place that appears as an open-air work of art.

Visiting the Sos Pupos Cliff means discovering a Sardinia far from the busiest routes, where sea, wild nature, and pure emotion come together. From Golfo Aranci, where the Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites is located, it is possible to plan an excursion to Bosa, pairing the discovery of the cliff with a visit to the village, famous for its pastel-colored houses reflected in the Temo River.
