The Voice Of Water: The Sacred Wells Of Sardinia 0 Commentaires

Why was the equinox so important for the Nuragic civilization?
The autumn equinox, which happens only twice a year, in March and in September, held a profound meaning for the Nuragic civilization, linked to seasonal cycles and the cult of water. And it is precisely today, September 22, the perfect day to visit a Nuragic sacred well.
What makes the sacred well of Santa Cristina so special?
I chose the Nuragic Complex Of Santa Cristina In Paulilatino, probably the most famous, with its perfectly preserved staircase descending to an underground chamber of impeccable geometry. Just two hours by car from the Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites (165 km), the journey itself is a delight: the road crosses the Mediterranean Scrub, which I love for its scents and its changing colours.
I slowly descend the steps of the well. Each step brings me closer to the water: it feels like a descent through time. Blocks of stone cut and fitted together without mortar, perfect and solid after more than three thousand years. Everything seems designed to unite two elements: water and light.
What happens inside the well during the equinox?
At the bottom, the reflection of the water shines like a mirror. During the equinox, the sunlight enters from the opening above, reflecting on the water and the walls, projecting an inverted image. It is not simply water: it is presence, divinity, life renewing itself. I think of the ancients who performed rituals here, offered gifts, and gazed into the perfect circle of the spring. The light falling from above, the shadow dancing on the walls: an encounter between earth and sky, between men and gods.
Why were sacred wells not just water sources?
Scholars agree: the sacred wells of Sardinia were not simple water sources. They were places of worship dedicated to the sacred element that guaranteed life. Here, rituals were celebrated linked to fertility, rebirth, and the relationship with the divine. Often, the orientation of the openings shows connections with astronomical phenomena. At the solstice or the equinox, the sun or the moon would reflect in the water in a play of light with a clear ritual meaning. For the Nuragic people, water was a bridge to the invisible, a voice that connected humans with the universe.
What does it feel like to visit the sacred wells of Sardinia?
There are many Sacred Wells and Holy Springs across Sardinia, each unique, but all sharing the same atmosphere: silence broken only by the gurgling of water, the sensation that the space was designed to speak to our innermost self. Visiting them, one realizes that it is not just about observing a monument, but about living an experience. It is as if those millenary stones remind us that we are water, that everything is born from it and returns to it.
From the sacred well to the sea of Golfo Aranci
After listening to the silent voice of water in a sacred well, it is wonderful to find it again in its vastest song: that of the sea. At Golfo Aranci, water is not hidden beneath stone but opens before the eyes in a blue horizon uniting sky and earth. Thus, a journey to Sardinia becomes complete: from the depth of the Nuragic sacred wells to the breath of the sea. Two different voices, but both eternal.
