The Wine Of Granite: Vermentino Di Gallura DOCG 0 Commentaires
by Daniela Toti
There are places where the land speaks through the vine. In Gallura, among granite hills and the breath of the maestrale wind, a wine is born that carries within it the character of this region: Vermentino di Gallura DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita).
The DOCG status was granted in 1996, and since then, Vermentino di Gallura has become an ambassador of Sardinia to the world.
A Land Both Harsh and Generous
Gallura is not an easy land. Its soils are poor, sandy, and rich in decomposed granite. The wind blows constantly, and the sun beats down for much of the year. Yet this very harshness is its strength.
The vines, which here sink their roots deep into the ground, learn to endure, to seek hidden water among the rocks. From that struggle emerges the unique character of Vermentino: elegant, mineral, luminous like the sea that surrounds it.
The ancient and somewhat mysterious origins of the Vermentino grape trace it back to Spain, Corsica, or Liguria. But in Gallura, it has found its definitive homeland. Here, on hills that look toward the sea, the wine acquires an unmistakable personality, shaped by granite and wind.
The Taste of Gallura in a Glass
Pouring a glass of Vermentino di Gallura is like opening a window onto the island. Its color is straw yellow with golden reflections, clear as a summer morning. On the nose, notes of white flowers, citrus, almond, and Mediterranean scrub emerge. On the palate, freshness and salinity blend in a balance that tells the story of the land from which it comes.
The Craft of Gallurese Winemakers
Winemakers in the region have learned to combine tradition and innovation, respecting nature and its rhythms. Many wineries are family-run: small cellars where vines are cultivated patiently, without forcing nature, in harmony with the landscape.
Harvest time, between late August and September, reflects each producer’s style. Some prefer a young Vermentino, lively and aromatic, while others allow it to mature longer, giving it greater body and complexity.
The production area covers municipalities in the north-eastern part of the island, stretching from the inland hills to the coast, a mosaic of microclimates that contributes to the wine’s range of nuances.
Tasting Gallura
To truly discover Vermentino di Gallura, it must be tasted on site, among the vineyards, overlooking the sea or the mountains.
Many wineries welcome visitors with tastings and guided experiences that combine wine, art, and landscape. Sitting in the shade of a wild olive tree, glass in hand, one perceives the magic of this territory: the silence broken only by the wind, the scent of warm earth, the light vibrating on the leaves.
From Granite to the Sea
After visiting the inland vineyards, the journey can continue toward the coast. In Golfo Aranci, the scent of the sea mingles with that of wine, and the landscape seems made of the same mineral substance that gives life to Vermentino. It is as if land and water meet in a perfect embrace: granite and vine, wind and sea.
